Painting in the Loire Valley

Let Spain seduce you! Costa Brava, where the mountains meet the sea, is the setting of this exciting painting tour in the province of Gerona. Craggy cliffs, sandy coves, pristine beaches and inland, the fascinating, ancient history all await to be painted and experienced. This region was also the home and setting for the surreal world of Salvadore Dali.

Day 1: Arrival in the Loire Valley

We will pick you up at the Tours train station early in the afternoon (TGVs ride from Paris Montparnasse station in 1hour and 15 minutes). Upon your arrival at our hotel, take time to settle in before our orientation meeting and champagne reception.

Our welcome reception will be followed by a delicious dinner.

Days 2: Painting at the hotel

The first day will be a slow day for you to deal with jetlag. In the morning, the teacher will give you the necessary basic advice to start the workshop in a group meeting, and start on your first painting.

In the afternoon, you will go on with the painting session on the hotel property that offers a variety of typical vignettes to paint.

...........

Day 3: Be inspired by Leonardo Da Vinci

W e will go to Amboise, where Leonardo Da Vinci lived at the end of his life. We will visit his home, the picturesque mansion of Clos Luce, where most of his inventions are displayed.

You will then have the unique opportunity to paint in his gardens. Surrounded by centuries-old pines, Italian cypresses, yews, madonna lilies, yellow irises, horned violets, European alders, cyclamen repandums, and of course, the famous Mona Lisa rose, you will be inspired by the magic of the park.

In additon to the wonderful nature, you will also able to admire some of Leonardo's inventions that have been built in wood, measuring several feet high, and displayed all over the gardens.

Day 4

We will visit the perfect estate for painters who like wine and architecture. In the morning, we will visit the cellar and taste white Vouvray wines. Then you will be in great condition for painting.

Lunch: on the estate

Afternoon: visit and painting of the Chapel and gardens. Built over 5 ceturies ago, on 7 levels, these terraced gardens are enchanting. No doubt you will find your ideal spot to paint.

Day 5: Chenonceau

We will visit one of the gems of the Loire Castles: Chenonceau . This amazing castle was built on a bridge and the proximity of water is delightful. The history of this place is incredibly rich, from the love intrigues under the reign of Henry II to the hospital it was turned into during WWII.

You will be able to pick among many subjects to paint: the orderly French style squares, views of the castle, the river plunging under the castle or the amazing vegetable patches.

We will end this beautiful day with the visit of the castle.

Day 6: Market in Amboise

Amboise has the largest market I the area. Stroll the market for fresh food, local products, souvenirs or photo opportunities. Painting or shopping, you will pick. And for those who are not interested by any, you can also decide to visit the Amboise castle or the charming timbered houses in the village.

"How you see and experience the world matters especially when you can combine art and travel. The combination of travel sketching (ink and watercolor) and painting gives you the best of both worlds; the immediacy of travel sketching and the spontaneity of plein air painting.

I want all the participants to leave the workshop with smiles on their faces knowing they received excellent group and personal instruction, successfully faced their artistic challenges, experienced the culture of Costa Brava and most importantly had fun.

Students will leave the workshop with specific exercises and instructions to improve their art and gain confidence with on-going practice".

About the teacher:

David Savellano is an artist who works primarily en plein air (outdoors), creating sketches and watercolor paintings that capture random moments—on the street, in nature, and wherever else his portable easel takes him.

“I enjoy working outdoors because it’s unpredictable and that lends itself to the kind of spontaneity you just can’t get in a studio,” he says.

Although largely self-taught as a watercolor painter, he credits his 30 years as a practicing architect with having given him the drawing skills and strong sense of perspective that have elevated his artwork.

David’s passion for outdoor painting isn’t limited to his own sketches and paintings, he also teaches it, offering classes distinguished by their intimate size and the generous amount of personal instruction he provides. His expert instruction enables students to improve their artistic skills and broadens their knowledge.

Teacher: Gary Tucker
Watercolor Painting Workshop

Gary has been living as a watercolor artist in Boston and the Cape Ann region for more than 20 years. When in Boston, Gary teaches to about 65 students a week, watercolor and drawing, giving demonstrations in watercolor to many of the museums and arts organizations in the area.
“Watercolor differs from other media in that there is a performance aspect to it. The fine pieces come out in one sitting and very often like a classic performance, something happens, a fusion of mind and subject, an improvisation that cannot be duplicated”.

There is only one thing that can be better than walking out the door towards a new destination with your paintbox in hand and that is to be joined in this adventure by friends.

I am sure our adventure in the Costa Brava will be a wonderful experience and will give us memories for a lifetime.

Painting our of doors is different than working in the studio - -and nothing is as rewarding as working on location. The rewards are in the experience of the moment, the light, the air, the sounds,  everything. This experience comes flooding back when you see your painting - even years later. It is what draws us outside again and again.

When teaching out of doors I like to demonstrate each morning, and with each lesson I try to impart something useful that builds upon the previous days work. The subjects that I demonstrate are:
Drawing: Placing the motif with a good idea of proportion and perspective
Design: Composition, Line, Tonal Values, around a center of interest
Watercolor Technique: Once or drawing and design are set we can completely concentrate on the painting process working with watercolor wet into wet, dry into wet, and using dry technique  Brushwork  Color strategies and more.
Critique: In the evening, after a day of painting, we gather together for a critique. It is a great learning moment to see your work through the eyes of others.

A few words about our destination -  It is the Costa Brava !!! - Subject matter in every direction!!

"Join us for a week of sketching with watercolor as we explore the breathtakingly beautiful landscape and architecturally unique villages of the Costa Brava.

As a practicing architect, architectural illustrator and watercolor painter, I am passionate about travel sketching and painting, and love to share that passion with others. It does not matter if you have never sketched or painted (or think you can do neither) since I believe everyone can do this with just a little coaxing and coaching.

I will demonstrate the fundamentals of simple perspective and composition; cover basic color theory and simple watercolor techniques, but the focus will be on individual expression and exploration. There is nothing that anchors memories (the view; the feel of the sun; the sounds; the smells; the immediacy of the moment) quite like the act of sketching and painting on location.

Having been a participant of one of Jackie's painting tours in 2014, and a teacher in June 2015, I know just how magical the experience can be!
