Painting in Provence

Discover why Provence has been an inspiration for generations of artists like Van Gogh, Cezanne,...

Day 1: Welcome Champagne Reception

We will pick you up at the Avignon train station. Upon your arrival at our guesthouse, take time to settle in or explore the village. In the evening, you will enjoy a welcome reception followed by a gourmet dinner.

Day 2: Ochre village of Roussillon

Roussillon, one of France's Most Beautiful Villages, sits on top of the world's biggest vein of ochre, the reddish pigment which has been used by artists for centuries. Paint red houses, ochre trails, cafes, what ever inspires you.

At the end of the day, we will take a walk inside the park, on the Ochre Trail revealing many fantastic rock and cliff formations.

You will also have time for shopping: don't miss out on the unique reddish poteries.

Day 3: Most spectacular village in Provence: Gordes

Gordes, also listed one of France's most beautiful villages, is the most spectacular village in Provence, perched on the southern edge of the high Plateau de Vaucluse.

The view from the village is a southern panorama out across fields, vineyards and forests, and small-perched villages to the Montagne du Luberon. You can choose to paint the breathtaking panorama, the village houses, or even the outdoor stalls.

Day 4: Market and Canals in "Isle sur la Sorgue"

L'Isle sur la Sorgue is a real paradise for painters and photographers.

Its colors are nature's green and the bright reflection of the water shines from the several canals running through its center.

In the morning, we will shop the incredible and colorful market: colorful arrays of Provencal fabric, tablecloths, pottery, silk scarves, natural soaps with dozens of scents and of course lavender products.

Day 5: Painting in the Village

Today will be a non driving day to allow even more time to painting.

We will spend the day painting either at the hotel or in the village: cobblestone streets, 18th century houses, flowers, doors,...

Day 6: On Van Gogh's trail in St Remy de Provence

Today, we will visit the beautiful old monastery of St Paul Mausole with the bedroom where Van Gogh stayed during his very troubled time in 1889-90. This is now a nursing home that has a permanent exhibition of paintings made by the patients and beautiful reproductions of some of Vincent van Gogh's paintings.

Outside the hospital, you will be able to paint the wonderful landscape that inspired the great impressionist: olive trees with the Alpilles mountains as background.

Day 7: Non Touristy Village of Oppede

Oppede is a non touristy jewel, not listed in travel books. While strolling the streets you will come to appreciate the quieteness and wonderful atmosphere that will seduce you, as it has dozens of artists who live there. This is our little kept secret village, the favourite of all our artists.

Day 8: Departure

It is time to say: "au revoir" but not "adieu" because you will be back. We just know it.

After our last breakfast together, we'll drive you to the Avignon train station by 10 am.

You will be well taken care of from your pick up at the Avignon train station to your drop off at the end of your stay.

Every day, we will drive you in a comfortable A/C mini van to different painting locations.

Option 1: Accommodation in a B&B

For the trips with Tracy Lewis, Adrienne Retief, Frank Eber and Evelyn Dunphy, you will stay in a restored farmhouse located in the heart of Provence, in a very charming non-touristy villlage.

In many ways this house speaks of Provence. The large salon with its fireplace will seduce you with its charming and friendly atmosphere. The view towards the Mont Ventoux from the terrace and from your bedroom is breathtaking. The blue shutters of the house will give you a real flair of Provence.

Most rooms have a full private bathroom.

This huge house drawn by Van Gogh and, inhabited by Daudet became a hotel of 25 rooms. A park of more than one hectare, dedicated to Provence will welcome you with its Mediterranean trees: secular umbrella pines, plane trees, cypresses and aromatic plants.

In the heart of the garden, enjpoy the swimming pool and take a nap under an olive-tree.

Each bedroom has A/C and a private bathroom.

Join me for 8 days of fun and painting the treasures of Provence up close and personal! Capture the details of your trip with a beautiful watercolor journal to remember your visit. Tracy will provide students with plenty of one-on-one time and individual feedback.Tracy is known for her limited palette of transparent watercolors. Layering luminous glazes of pure hue to give everything a candy coating of Easter-like color.

Each day will include demonstrations of elements of landscape painting with lots of personal instruction. "Develop your ability to look at the complexity of the scene in front of you, and focus your vision so that you can design a good painting that speaks of the essence of the scene, rather than merely reporting the things in it". Every painting should have a concept, and your composition, colors and techniques must work towards bringing your concept to life.

The goal of Evelyn’s workshops is to share her painting knowledge and experience with each student in the way that will best help them to further their own personal development.

In this workshop you will learn how to judge the ratio of pigment and water in order to get the desired color and value the first time, combine pigments for glowing, transparent mixtures, use your brush most effectively, and begin to "name the thing you are attempting to do. Naming it makes it possible to do it."

Evelyn is a sought-after teacher with waiting lists for her studio classes and workshops.
"Evelyn is the most informative, creative, sharing workshop leader one could ever find" - student's comment from her workshop at Frederic Church's camp on Millinocket Lake in Maine.

" Our time together painting in Ireland has influenced how I paint in a rather profound way. I knew it then, after the Retreat, but you never know how it will hold up. I can now confidently say, 3 months later, it has a lasting impact. You are an extraordinary teacher in the ways you are able to divine where each student is in their process, and adapt what you know to share productively and successfully with them. I am a drawing teacher; I know a good teacher when I meet one, and you are one. Thank you!" Susan McChesney, Ashville, NC. Partcipant's in the workshop to Ireland, 2013.

We will focus on values, shapes, edges and color as well as paint handling and materials. Jennifer will offer a demonstration each day and advice on a one-on-one basis in the field. Additionally, there will be class discussions and critique of work so that participants will learn from individual instruction as well as each other.

Just imagine….lavender fields, hilltop villages, outdoor cafés, and window boxes overflowing with colorful flowers. Now put yourself in the picture, sitting at a little café with your sketchbook and paints spread out before you, sketching a window across the way, with its lace curtains, blue shutters, and red geraniums. What could be more wonderful?
In this week-long Provence workshop, all of the logistics will be taken care of. All you have to do is relax and enjoy your time in this stunningly beautiful part of France. We’ll have plenty of time to capture once-in-a-lifetime experiences on the pages of our watercolor journals as we explore the charming villages of Roussillon, Gordes, Isle sur la Sorgue, Oppede, and St. Remy de Provence.
Our focus will be on illustrated watercolor journaling. You’ll learn how to add style and interest to your sketchbook pages through the use of unique page layouts and borders, and we’ll cover several fun new lettering styles. In addition, I’ll offer daily demonstrations of techniques for painting the subject matter you’ll encounter each day. And you’ll be painting right along with me, since we learn more by doing than by simply observing. The workshop is suitable for all levels, but some experience with drawing and watercolor would be helpful.
Each student will be given a spiral-bound book containing all of the information we cover in the workshop. It’s filled with great ideas for jazzing up your journal pages, and also has a huge section of step-by-step illustrated instructions for how to paint everything from stone buildings to a sprig of lavender (which will be in full bloom when we’re there!) The handout ensures that you can relax during the workshop, knowing that even if you can’t absorb it all during the week, you’ll have complete information that you can refer to for years to come.
"My enthusiastic teaching style, thorough instructions, and encouraging one-on-one support guarantee that you’ll learn and grow as an artist during our time together. We’ll be immersing ourselves in the history, culture, and beauty of the south of France, and I’m happily anticipating all the sketch-worthy scenes that await us (along with the amazing food, wine, and shopping!) Join me in discovering the wonders of Provence together and creating memorable journals of the delights and surprises that await us".

"Does the thought of travel journaling attract yet intimidate you? Then come join me for a week of sketching and painting the beautiful sites in and around Provence.

We will travel light with just a small bag of watercolor supplies, a journal and your camera. No need for travel easels, unless that is something you wish to use".

Cynthia will help you to explore different approaches for your journal. This will include how to prepare your journal before you begin your first sketch and how to incorporate your photos after you return home. Cynthia will also help you to decide on what to include in your journal based on your skill level.

So if you are new to sketching and painting in a journal there will be plenty of opportunities to create your own unique and colorful images. Or, if you are ready to learn how to sketch village shops or buildings, then Cynthia will give you a simplified method for conquering your fear of perspective.

Each daily excursion will provide new opportunities for journal entries. We will discuss how to approach each new site prior to getting started. And, at the end of the day, there will be friendly group art critiques.
