Painting in Provence

Discover why Provence has been an inspiration for generations of artists like Van Gogh, Cezanne,...

Day 1: Welcome Champagne Reception

We will pick you up at the Avignon train station. Upon your arrival at our guesthouse, take time to settle in or explore the village. In the evening, you will enjoy a welcome reception followed by a gourmet dinner.

Day 2: Ochre village of Roussillon

Roussillon, one of France's Most Beautiful Villages, sits on top of the world's biggest vein of ochre, the reddish pigment which has been used by artists for centuries. Paint red houses, ochre trails, cafes, what ever inspires you.

At the end of the day, we will take a walk inside the park, on the Ochre Trail revealing many fantastic rock and cliff formations.

You will also have time for shopping: don't miss out on the unique reddish poteries.

Day 3: Most spectacular village in Provence: Gordes

Gordes, also listed one of France's most beautiful villages, is the most spectacular village in Provence, perched on the southern edge of the high Plateau de Vaucluse.

The view from the village is a southern panorama out across fields, vineyards and forests, and small-perched villages to the Montagne du Luberon. You can choose to paint the breathtaking panorama, the village houses, or even the outdoor stalls.

Day 4: Market and Canals in "Isle sur la Sorgue"

L'Isle sur la Sorgue is a real paradise for painters and photographers.

Its colors are nature's green and the bright reflection of the water shines from the several canals running through its center.

In the morning, we will shop the incredible and colorful market: colorful arrays of Provencal fabric, tablecloths, pottery, silk scarves, natural soaps with dozens of scents and of course lavender products.

Day 5: Painting in the Village

Today will be a non driving day to allow even more time to painting.

We will spend the day painting either at the hotel or in the village: cobblestone streets, 18th century houses, flowers, doors,...

Day 6: On Van Gogh's trail in St Remy de Provence

Today, we will visit the beautiful old monastery of St Paul Mausole with the bedroom where Van Gogh stayed during his very troubled time in 1889-90. This is now a nursing home that has a permanent exhibition of paintings made by the patients and beautiful reproductions of some of Vincent van Gogh's paintings.

Outside the hospital, you will be able to paint the wonderful landscape that inspired the great impressionist: olive trees with the Alpilles mountains as background.

Day 7: Medieval Village in the Luberon

This non touristy jewel, not listed in travel books is our little gem, our favorite village. While strolling the streets you will come to appreciate the quieteness and wonderful atmosphere that will seduce you, as it has dozens of artists who live there. This is our little kept secret village, the favourite of all our artists.

Day 8: Departure

It is time to say: "au revoir" but not "adieu" because you will be back. We just know it.

After our last breakfast together, we'll drive you to the Avignon train station by 10 am.

Transportation

You will be well taken care of from your pick up at the Avignon train station to your drop off at the end of your stay.

Every day, we will drive you in a comfortable A/C mini van to different painting locations.

Option 1: Accommodation in a B&B

For the trips with Deborah Rublin , Vladislav Yeliseyev, Michael Reardon and Sandy Delehanty, you will stay in a restored farmhouse located in the heart of Provence, in a very charming non-touristy villlage.

In many ways this house speaks of Provence. The large salon with its fireplace will seduce you with its charming and friendly atmosphere. The view towards the Mont Ventoux from the terrace and from your bedroom is breathtaking. The blue shutters of the house will give you a real flair of Provence.

Most rooms have a full private bathroom.

This huge house drawn by Van Gogh and, inhabited by Daudet became a hotel of 25 rooms. A park of more than one hectare, dedicated to Provence will welcome you with its Mediterranean trees: secular umbrella pines, plane trees, cypresses and aromatic plants.

In the heart of the garden, enjpoy the swimming pool and take a nap under an olive-tree.

Join award-winning painter Jennifer McChristian for an inspiring eight day painting trip to the South of France. This workshop is for all levels of artists who want to learn the time-honored joy of painting "en plein air".The deep, personal satisfaction derived from this form of instense observation has made it a lasting tradition which is especially needed in these modern times. What better way to learn this traditional art form than to step back in time with us to paint the pastoral Provencal countryside, just as they did a hundred years ago.

Jennifer will teach you to interpret this magical environment in terms of paint, using light and color to create form. Color relationships, composition, simplifying and the benefits of painting outdoors will be discussed, as well as how to design and build a painting that carries an emotional impact. We will focus on values, shapes, edges and color as well as paint handling and materials. Jennifer will offer a demonstration each day and advice on a one-on-one basis in the field. Additionally, there will be class discussions and critique of work so that participants will learn from individual instruction as well as each other.

Jennifer McChristian is an award-winning artist who was born and raised in Montreal, Canada. In 1986, she moved to California, where she was an animation artist for Disney and Nickelodeon, among other studios. She has studied under Robert Blue, Karl Dempwolf and Steve Huston, and leads painting and drawing workshops internationally.

Just imagine….lavender fields, hilltop villages, outdoor cafés, and window boxes overflowing with colorful flowers. Now put yourself in the picture, sitting at a little café with your sketchbook and paints spread out before you, sketching a window across the way, with its lace curtains, blue shutters, and red geraniums. What could be more wonderful?

In this week-long Provence workshop, all of the logistics will be taken care of. All you have to do is relax and enjoy your time in this stunningly beautiful part of France. We’ll have plenty of time to capture once-in-a-lifetime experiences on the pages of our watercolor journals as we explore the charming villages of Roussillon, Gordes, Isle sur la Sorgue, Oppede, and St. Remy de Provence.

Our focus will be on illustrated watercolor journaling. You’ll learn how to add style and interest to your sketchbook pages through the use of unique page layouts and borders, and we’ll cover several fun new lettering styles. In addition, I’ll offer daily demonstrations of techniques for painting the subject matter you’ll encounter each day. And you’ll be painting right along with me, since we learn more by doing than by simply observing. The workshop is suitable for all levels, but some experience with drawing and watercolor would be helpful.

Each student will be given a spiral-bound book containing all of the information we cover in the workshop. It’s filled with great ideas for jazzing up your journal pages, and also has a huge section of step-by-step illustrated instructions for how to paint everything from stone buildings to a sprig of lavender (which will be in full bloom when we’re there!) The handout ensures that you can relax during the workshop, knowing that even if you can’t absorb it all during the week, you’ll have complete information that you can refer to for years to come.

"My enthusiastic teaching style, thorough instructions, and encouraging one-on-one support guarantee that you’ll learn and grow as an artist during our time together. We’ll be immersing ourselves in the history, culture, and beauty of the south of France, and I’m happily anticipating all the sketch-worthy scenes that await us (along with the amazing food, wine, and shopping!) Join me in discovering the wonders of Provence together and creating memorable journals of the delights and surprises that await us".

"We artists see things differently. When we travel we want to absorb all that is going on around us and capture forever the scenes we are seeing. We just don't snap a photo and move on, we want to stop and paint a painting.

But hauling art supplies, easel wet paints etc. is a pain. When you travel with me you will bring a Watercolor Journal, small watercolor field kit palette, ink pens, brushes and your camera. With these tools (all of which fit in a small backpack or shoulder bag), you will learn to create your very own "Story Book" of your trip. (Even beginners can do this)!

Each day Jackie will find us a lovely location, we will sit in a shady spot, sketch the scene in front of us and absorb the sounds and aromas around us.

You will learn to capture the color in watercolor and add your thoughts in writing.

You will return home with a lovely Story Book filled with memories of your trip and a new way of looking at the world.

The program is open to artists of all skill levels.

The best thing about our itinerary for travel sketching in Provence is the sheer breadth of subjects to choose from — that, and the near-magical light and colour of this unique part of the world.

In our week together I'll teach you techniques for capturing the close-up and colourful in villages and towns, as well as the distant and scenic in French landscapes. We'll sketch iconic market scenes, fields of lavender in bloom, hillside towns and panoramas. In true travel sketching tradition, we'll pack light — carrying a small bag for art materials and a folding stool.

This workshop is designed to give you confidence sketching wherever you are, gazing at a street scene in a medieval town or the way the light grazes the trunk of an olive tree. We'll work spontaneously, and I'll show you how to keep your watercolour sketches fresh and colourful. Each day will start with a short demo and end with a critique, hopefully while sitting in a shady courtyard with a glass of wine in hand. As part of a small group, you'll have plenty of individual attention as we work on value studies, composi-tion, simplifying a scene and capturing the essence of a place. We'll focus on having fun while we sketch, recording as much as we can as we move from café to hilltop. The aim is to have you return home with a fat book filled with fresh and colourful sketches.

Shari Blaukopf, a Montreal-based painter, graphic design teacher, illustrator and sketch blogger, is best known for her urban scenes in watercolour. She is a correspondent for UrbanSketchers.org, a global organization that promotes on-location sketching and is co-founder of Urban Sketchers Montreal. She has given many watercolour workshops both on her own and through the Urban Sketchers Workshop Program in Montreal, Galway, New York, Portland (Oregon), Barcelona, Singapore and Manchester (UK). Shari is a signature member of the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour and her paintings are in corporate, government and private collections in Canada, the United States and abroad. You can find her online courses Sketching Landscapes in Pen, Ink and Watercolor and Sketching the City in Pen, Ink and Watercolor on craftsy.com.
